"The Reader's Choice Book Discussion" /Hidden Valley Road by Robert Kolker2021-11-18T15:00:00Don and Mimi Galvin seemed to be living the American dream. Don's work with the Air Force brought them to Colorado. The Galvins became one of the first families to be studied by the National Institute of Mental Health. Their story offers a shadow history of the science of schizophrenia, from the era of institutionalization, lobotomy, and the schizophrenogenic mother to the search for genetic markers for the disease, always amid profound disagreements about the nature of the illness itself. Samples of their DNA informed decades of genetic research that offers paths to treatment, prediction, and eradication of the disease for future generations. The Reader's Choice Book Groupo is co-sponsored by the Norwalk Senior Center and led by Norwalk Public Library Director of Library Information Services, Cynde Bloom Lahey. Books are available to be checked out of the Norwalk Public Library. For additional information or to register please email Cynde Bloom Lahey at clahey@norwalkpl.org.
